Washington, D.C. - March 12, 2010 The Order Sons of Italy in America® (OSIA), the largest and oldest organization representing Italian American men and women, will celebrate its 105th anniversary by holding the OSIA National Day of Recognition on June 19, 2010.

"The Day of Recognition," noted its principal sponsor, National 3rd Vice President Daniel J. Longo of Maryland, "will be an opportunity for all Grand and Subordinate Lodges across the country to commemorate the founding of OSIA and celebrate its continued success." The organization was founded in 1905 by Vincenzo Sellaro, M.D. and five other Italian immigrants in the Little Italy neighborhood of New York City.

Dr. Sellaro and the co-founders of "Figli d'Italia" (later translated into English as "Order Sons of Italy in America®") envisioned the organization as a support system for all Italian immigrants that would assist them with assimilation into American society. In its early years, OSIA established free schools to teach immigrants English and centers to help them become U.S. citizens. The first OSIA lodges formed orphanages and homes for the elderly, life insurance and mortuary funds, credit unions, welfare societies and scholarship funds to aid members in need. In 1959, OSIA established its philanthropic arm, The Sons of Italy Foundation® (SIF) which has given more than $109 million to numerous charitable, educational and cultural efforts to date.

Today, OSIA has more than 500,000 family members and supporters and a network of more than 650 chapters coast to coast. OSIA continues to exemplify the goals of its founders, working at the community, national and international levels to promote the heritage and culture of an estimated 26 million Italian Americans.

In celebration of Dr. Sellaro's vision and the ongoing efforts of all OSIA members, the National Day of Recognition will enable each Grand and Subordinate lodge to honor and promote the organization. All lodges are encouraged to begin spreading the word about OSIA and its National Day of Recognition, to organize their own celebrations and to seek out local officials for public proclamations.
