Washington, D.C., Nov. 17, 1998 - Sons of Italy Foundation® (SIF) Trustee Frank Privitera, of Arlington, Mass., has donated an additional $25,000 to the Privitera Scholarship Fund, bringing the total up to his pledged amount of $100,000.

Privitera made the donation on Nov. 14 at the Order Sons of Italy in America®'s (OSIA) Executive Session in Charleston, S.C.

At the meeting, Privitera was also honored by OSIA for his philanthropy to the SIF. He received an award that highlighted this year's National Education & Leadership Awards Gala and the SIF's scholarship program, to which he has generously contributed.

In accepting the award, Privitera explained why it is so important for him to give. He told the story of how, as a young lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed in Georgia, he lost his wallet and had no way to get home to Boston for Christmas. A woman at the train station bought him a ticket and asked that all he do in return was promise that he would give back to others.

"At first he had nothing so he gave little," Privitera said referring to himself. "As time went on he made more. And he gave more . . . And as fate would have it, the more he gave to others, the more God gave back to him."

The Privitera Scholarship Fund perpetually awards one or more scholarships per year to students seeking higher education. The scholarships are given through the SIF's National Leadership Grant Competition, the annual scholarship program that attracts some of the brightest students from across the country.

"My father personified the proud Italian, and he made me proud to be Italian," Privitera said of his reasons for establishing a perpetual scholarship fund.

Privitera also recently gave $5,000 to the foundation through the National Office Naming Opportunities Program. The front courtyard of the National Office that the SIF shares with OSIA and the Commission for Social Justice®, in Washington, D.C., will bear his name.

Privitera is a prominent Boston businessman and attorney. He is a recipient of the Boys Town of Italy's Man of the Year and the Project Triangle's Humanitarian of the Year awards. He and his wife have been honored by the Knights of Don Orione as Man and Woman of the Year.

Privitera made his initial $25,000 donation in August 1997, at OSIA's National Convention in Palm Beach, Fla. His second and third donations of $25,000 each were made at the OSIA Executive Session in Chicago, Nov. 13-15, 1997, and at the OSIA Plenary Session, May 23, 1998, in Washington, D.C.
