General Information
The American-Italian Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization founded
in 1981 to foster international cooperation in cancer research, prevention
and treatment. The Foundation awards post-doctoral fellowships to young
scientists, provides free mammograms and prostate screenings to underserved
women and men in the Greater New York area, funds international clinical
trials and cutting edge conferences for cancer researchers and physicians.
AICF represents the European School of Oncology (Milan, Italy) in the
United States and is affiliated with many outstanding cancer research
and nonprofit organizations including: Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer
Center, National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Coalition, the Greater
New York Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and many more.
The Foundation has a staff of 5 and a volunteer base of more than 50
individuals who donate more then 7200 hours in office, outreach and
patient assistance support to the organization.
Internship Opportunities
The Intern would be part of the staff and work on several projects during
the year that can be finalized based on expertise and interest. The
potential projects for 2002-2003 are:

Cancer Screening Programs for Underserved Women: |

Mammography |
| |
Assist volunteers and attend some of AICF's 150 sites |
| |
Develop
and design volunteer and community leader handbooks in print and
electronic forms, create PowerPoint or other presentation materials
for training meetings |
| |
Assist
in the design and development of a survey instrument to measure
the strengths and weaknesses of the program and assist in compiling
the results from a sampling of the 5000 women who will be screened. |
| 2.
Fundraising: |
| |
Assist
with the annual benefit gala which raises 1.4 million of the AICF's
annual budget including donor solicitation, development
of auction catalog and volunteer support Work with staff
and volunteers to make the November 12 annual gala successful. |

Conduct
Internet and Foundation Center and telephone prospect research
and assist in grant writing. |
| |
Identify
health care and other sponsors for AICF's third
annual International Roundtable open to
the public in June 2002 on cutting edge cancer
research. |
| |
Assist
in press relations and logistics. |
| 3.
Public Relations: |
| |
Design
a public relations plan for AICF's programs, identifying
appropriate media outlets, drafting press releases, following
up with media and creating press kits for programs. |
| 4.
Provide support and editorial content for AICF's website. |
| |
Overall
supervision of the Intern will be the responsibility of Dr. Esther
R. Dyer AICF's Executive Director who has extensive experience
in supervising academic and corporate internships and management
training programs. In a small office, a greater amount of office/clerical
work is required of all staff than in a larger organization. AICF
is dedicated to providing a meaningful experience for interns
and can tailor the internship to focus on the interns' interest,
e.g. screening and outreach programs, fundraising and special
events, research, public relations and communications. |
