Study Abroad & Special Scholarships


Global Experiences Italian Language & Internship Scholarship

A 10 week program that consists of four weeks of Italian language training and a six week internship in Florence or Milan in one of the following internship sectors: Advertising/Marketing, Architecture, Fashion Business, Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising/ Marketing, Fine Arts/Museum, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Photography or Restoration.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens of Italian descent (at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent) in their junior or senior year of undergraduate study for the Fall 2008 term, who have completed at least 2 semesters (or the equivalent) of university Italian language study. Previous SIF scholarship recipients are not eligible.

Requirements: Requirements are the same as requirements for general scholarships, with one exception:

  • Substitute the following item for item #6 in the list of requirements for general scholarships:
    Essay: Submit a typewritten original essay of 500-750 on the following topic:
    “Italy’s smaller contributions to everyday life are so numerous as to go unnoticed. There would be no pistols but for the city of Pistoia...no millinery but for the city of Milan; no blue jeans but for the city of Genoa, Genes, where the blue cotton cloth was first produced...no Neapolitan ice-cream, no Roman candles, no Venetian blinds...Italians have discovered America for the Americans; taught poetry, statesmanship, and the ruses of trade to the English; military art to the Germans; cuisine to the French; acting and ballet dancing to the Russians; and music to everybody” (Luigi Barzini, The Italians 1964)

The Joseph L. Bracone Memorial Scholarship

Established by family and friends of Joseph L. Bracone who served his country in Vietnam, earning a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

Eligibility: U.S. citizen of Italian descent (at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent) enrolled in a four-year, accredited academic institution for the Fall 2008 term. Open to all liberal arts majors with preference given to those studying business, finance or pre-law.

Deadline: Deadline is the same as for general scholarships.


Sons of Italy Foundation/American University of Rome Scholarship(One year of study abroad)

Eligibility: U.S. citizen of Italian descent (at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent) who will enter their sophomore, junior or senior year of college in fall 2007.

Application & Requirements: AUR application + $35 fee for those who are not current AUR students. Contact the SIF at 202/547-5106 or scholarships@osia.org.


Sons of Italy Foundation/George L. Graziadio Scholarship

Eligibility: U.S. citizens of Italian descent (at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent) who are students at the George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University in California.

Application & Requirements: Requires special application. Contact the Graziadio School of Business at www.bschool.pepperdine.edu or 310-568-5500. .


Sorrento Lingue Scholarship

Six months of Italian language and culture study in Sorrento, Italy from January - June 2008.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens of Italian descent (at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent) in their junior or senior year of undergraduate study, or graduate study at an accredited academic institution. Basic knowledge of the Italian language preferred (Sorrento Lingue will accept students whose fluency in Italian ranges from beginner - advanced).

Requirements: Requirements are the same as requirements for general scholarships, with one exception:

  • Substitute the following item for item #6 in the list of requirements for general scholarships:
    Essay: Submit a typewritten original essay of 500-750 words in Italian on why learning Italian is important in today's world and how you plan to use your Italian language degree.
Deadline: Deadline is the same as for general scholarships.
