WASHINGTON, September
29, 2004 The
Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) is a partner
in the upcoming Splendor of Florence festival in
New York City, September 30-October 10. This is
an eleven-day festival of cultural, educational,
culinary, and musical events that highlight distinguished
Florentine artisans.
"OSIA
is honored to be an active part of this festival
that promotes Florentine culture. It is important
that we allow the community to share in and learn
from our great heritage," says
Joseph Sciame, OSIA National President.
Sciame
is on the Splendor of Florence Advisory Board,
chaired by Dr. David Caputo, president of Pace
University, which helped plan the festival. OSIA
is participating by enlisting a core group of Italian
translators to work with the artisans from Florence
during the course of the exhibit.
One
of the highlights of the festival will be a performance
by Florentine composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
This is the first public concert by Tedesco in
50 years.
There
will be a special art exhibition at the Federal
Hall National Memorial titled, "The
Medici on Wall Street." It features
16th and 17th century Medici family portraits displayed
from October 1-November 12, on loan from the Uffizi
Gallery in Florence.
The
Splendor of Florence events will take place at
various sites in lower Manhattan including the
World Financial Center Winter Garden and the Michael
Schimmel Center of the Arts at Pace University.
