Press Contact: Kylie Cafiero, (202) 547-2900 kcafiero@osia.org

WASHINGTON, August 3, 2004
The city of Benevento in Campania and the cultural organization, Iside Nova honored OSIA National President Joseph Sciame at the fourth annual Premio "A Prescindere" ceremony on July 7. Over 3000 guests attended the award's ceremony at which Sciame was recognized for his achievements in promoting Italian culture and higher education. Mr. Sciame is vice president for community relations at St. John's University in New York.

"A Prescindere" honors the memory of the late Totò, a beloved Italian comedian. This year's event included performances by Italian singers and comedians. It was coordinated by the Iside Nova, under its chair and president, Alessandra Lonardo Mastella.

"I was honored to accept this international recognition in the name of OSIA's many members. Once again, I was moved by the warmth, cordiality, culture, artistic ability and world of diplomacy in Italy," says Sciame.

The evening's master of ceremonies was popular Italian television host, Pippo Baudo. Also honored were Silvana Giacobini, publisher and editor of CHI Magazine; Sergio Valente, hair stylist and designer; Mimmo Di Francia, singer; Antonio Corbo, journalist; Tiziana Ferrario, television commentator; and Patty Pravo, singer.

OSIA is the largest and longest-established national organization for men and women of Italian descent in the United States. Established in 1905, OSIA has more than 600,000 members and supporters and a network of more than 700 chapters coast to coast. OSIA works at the community, national and international levels to promote the heritage and culture of an estimated 26 million Italian Americans, the nation's fifth largest ethnic group, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
