SONS OF ITALY SALUTES AUTHOR LISA SCOTTOLINE

Press Contact: Kylie Cafiero, (202) 547-2900 kcafiero@osia.org

WASHINGTON, June 14, 2004
Best-selling author Lisa Scottoline has been singled out by the Sons of Italy for her artful use of Italian American history and characters that populate her mystery novels. Her latest, Killer Smile, has been chosen as a Sons of Italy Book Club selection for the summer of 2004.

"Author Scottoline uses her own experiences growing up in Philadelphia to shape her novels.  In them, Italian American characters are lawyers, prosecutors and just ordinary citizens, raising their families.  This is refreshing and unfortunately all-too-rare," says OSIA National President Joseph Sciame.

Killer Smile is the story of Amadeo Brandolini, an Italian immigrant in Philadelphia, who died under strange circumstances when he was interned by the U.S. government in World War II. More than 60 years later, Mary DiNunzio, a young lawyer, tries to uncover the truth in this riveting mystery novel by Scottoline, herself a former trial lawyer, who was raised in Philadelphia.

Drawing on the wartime experiences of her own family, Scottoline takes the reader on a journey through time with many twists and surprises. Hers is the first mystery novel to capture the very real Italian American experience in World War II, when 600,000 Italian immigrants were declared "enemy aliens." [$25.95; hard cover; 368 pages; HarperCollins]

Scottoline currently is on a book tour promoting the novel. See attached schedule for details or contact Marie Elena Martinez at 212 207 7468 in New York City. E-mail: marieelena.martinez@harpercollins.com.

The other Sons of Italy summer book club selections will be released in July.
