Press Contact: Kylie Cafiero, (202) 547-2900 kcafiero@osia.org

WASHINGTON, April 30, 2004
IThe true story of Italian American internment during World War II, a love story set in Italy and a book containing two short stories set in Sicily are all part of the Spring 2004 Sons of Italy Book Club selections.

  • Una Storia Segreta Edited by Lawrence DiStasi. An authoritative review that documents the restrictions, searches and other civil rights violations that occurred during World War II to people in the U.S. because they had Italian last names and were not citizens.  [$21.95; soft cover; 327 pages; Heyday Books]
  • A Kiss from Maddalena by Christopher Castellani. A haunting novel about family duty and love that survive even in the worst of times. Inspired by the author’s own family’s experience, the book captures life in a small, war-torn Italian village whose people held strong to their values. [$23.95; hardcover; 338 pages; Algonquin Books]
  • Clay Creatures by Mark Ciabattari. This slim volume gives the reader "two for the price of one"—two intriguing short stories set in Sicily whose characters face an absurd dilemma:  The Jar (La Giara ) by the Nobel-prize winning author Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) and The Urn  by acclaimed contemporary writer Mark Ciabattari.  [$10.00; soft cover; 94 pages; Canio’s Books]

ALSO WORTH READING…

  • Images of America: Little Italy  By Emelise Aleandri, PhD
This is a pictorial history of a remarkable neighborhood where a century ago thousands of Italians first settled in New York City.  Also included are colorful details about Little Italy's businesses, entertainment, traditions and community leaders. [$19.99; soft cover; Arcadia Publishing]
  • Pagan Babies and Other Catholic Memories  By Gina Cascone
Growing up Catholic and Italian American in New Jersey during the 1960s is the central theme of Cascone’s novel. She takes us to that distant time and place where the nuns ruled in school and papa was the boss at home.  [$12.00; soft cover;Washington Square Press]
