Press Contact: Kylie Cafiero, (202) 547-2900 kcafiero@osia.org

WASHINGTON, D.C. - October 1, 2004
It's Italian American Heritage month! The fall 2004 Sons of Italy Book Club celebrates Italian American heritage with selections about Columbus, the immigration experience and evolution of social class in pursuit of the American dream.

The Enemies of Christopher Columbus by Thomas A. Bowden. Who are the enemies of Columbus and why do they want to destroy his reputation? This book provides this answer and others in a clear and direct question-and-answer format. Also includes passages about the "Indian question" from legendary writers such as Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson, and Charles Dickens. [$29.95; hard cover; 133 pages; The Paper Tiger]

Seasons in Basilicata by David Yeadon. Inspired by Carlo Levi's masterpiece, Christ Stopped at Eboli (see "Also Worth Reading"), David Yeadon spent a year in Aliano, the same village where Levi was exiled to nearly 70 years earlier. The story follows Yeadon and his wife as they rent a house and live among the 1,000 inhabitants of this little town in Basilicata, creating a vivid portrayal of a place that few outsiders know. [$25.95; hard cover; 480 pages; HarperCollins]

Limbo: Blue Collar Roots, White-Collar Dreams by Alfred Lubrano. In his work of narrative nonfiction, award-winning reporter Alfred Lubrano describes the experiences of over a hundred "straddlers," who represent the 13 million Americans stuck in a class-dictated limbo marked by resentment, jealousy and racism. They face the daunting task of fitting into a middle-class life without losing touch with their blue collar families. [$27.95; hard cover; 272 pages; Wiley]

ALSO WORTH READING…

Christ Stopped at Eboli by Carlo Levi. Levi, a writer, painter, and physician, tells of his experiences in Lucania (today's Basilicata), where this educated northern Italian Jew was exiled shortly before WW II for his opposition to Mussolini. Over time, he is accepted by the villagers, whom he comes to admire and respect. [$27.00; paperback; 272 pages; Farrar Straus Giroux]

Admiral of the Ocean Sea: A Life of Christopher Columbus by Samuel Eliot Morison. This Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Christopher Columbus retraces the steps of his voyages that changed the world. A great companion to The Enemies of Christopher Columbus, this 1942 classic contains maps, drawings and charts. [$28.99; hard cover; 680 pages; Little, Brown]

One Hundred & One Beautiful Small Towns in Italy by Paolo Lazzarin. Sit back and take a tour of the country's less traveled roads, history and sights of small towns in Italy's 20 regions. A detailed appendix at the end of the book recommends restaurants, hotels and more. [$45.00; hard cover; 276 pages w/ 300 color photos; Rizzoli]
