Guidelines
Italian
America is a quarterly magazine produced, published
and distributed by the Order Sons of Italy in America
(OSIA), the nation's largest and longest-established organization
for Italian American men and women.
Italian America has an estimated readership of more
than 180,000. The magazine is OSIA's official national
publication and a membership benefit. Annual subscriptions
are offered to nonmembers for $20 in the United States
and $30.00 U.S internationally.
Most of the magazine is written in-house with the exception
of two feature stories per issue. We invite freelance
writers, photographers and illustrators to submit queries
for these feature articles.
We look for tightly written stories with character,
drama and impact. Topics can include an important
personality living or dead; a colorful aspect of contemporary
Italian or Italian American life; a little-known chapter
in Italian American history; a new or historical Italian
festival, product, cultural institution or societal
issue.
Features should run 750 to 1,000 words and
must be accompanied by two to three color graphics.
These can be photographs, slides, transparencies or
electronic images [in TIF or JPG with 300 to 400 dpi].
Please send a query letter to the address below,
fully outlining your idea, a sample of your work (previously
published material preferred), and a resume or short
biography. All work must adhere to the very highest
journalistic standards.
Italian America purchases non-exclusive
worldwide periodical publication and syndication rights
in all languages, in all mediums including electronic
publication for both the story and photographs.
The magazine shares all syndication fees received
with the author. Written contracts are required in
all transactions with freelancers.
Italian
America pays freelancers on a per-project basis 30 days
after publication, unless agreed to otherwise by the
editor and the contributor. The honorarium for an article
and photographs ranges from $50.00 to $250.00. Each
contributor receives complimentary copies of the magazine.
No payment is provided and no responsibility is accepted
for news releases and other unsolicited materials received
for the promotional purposes of an individual or organization.
We do not accept and take no responsibility for unsolicited
manuscripts. If requested, submission of manuscripts
and other materials should adhere to the following guidelines:
Manuscripts should be typed and double-spaced on numbered
pages. Submissions should adhere closely to Associated
Press style.
We prefer to receive manuscripts on 3.5" floppy
diskettes or on Zip disks formatted for Windows-compatible
computer systems. When submitting a diskette or disk,
please save your material in WordPerfect 8 (or below),
MS Word 4 (or below), RTF, or ASCII format. We prefer
photographs and illustrations sent either on floppy
diskette, Zip disk, or dry-mount boards.
