The Italian American Congressional Delegation

Currently, 28 men and women of Italian descent are serving in the 108th U.S. Congress: five senators and 23 representatives.

Among them are three women in the House of Representatives, including Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.), who was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in January, 2007, elevating her to the highest post ever held by a woman, and by an Italian American, in the history of the U.S. Congress.

The first Italian American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives was Francis B. Spinola (D-N.Y.), a Civil War Union general, who served from 1887 to 1891. The first Italian American congresswoman was Ella Grasso (D-Conn.) who served from 1970 to 1975.

In the Senate, John Orlando Pastore (D-R.I.) was the first Italian American senator (1950-1976). In 1995, Mary Landrieu (D-La.) became the first Italian American woman ever elected to the Senate.
