National Leadership Grant Competition

The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), the world's longest-existing and largest organization representing American men and women of Italian heritage, has long been involved in the promotion of educational excellence through scholarship programs. OSIA, through the Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF) and its more than 700 state and local chapters, has awarded nearly $34 million in scholarships since 1968. In 2004, numerous merit-based scholarships will be awarded, including the prestigious Henry Salvatori Scholarship and the Pietro Secchia Scholarship for study abroad at the John Cabot University in Rome.


Eligibility

American citizens of Italian descent enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a four-year, accredited academic institution for the Fall 2002 term are eligible. Previous grant recipients are not eligible.


Application Deadline

Applications and all required materials must be postmarked, in one package, no later than Feb. 28, 2004. Applications and/or required materials postmarked after Feb. 28, 2004, will not be accepted under any circumstance. Transcripts may be mailed separately but must be postmarked by Feb. 28, 2004. Scholarship Awards

Applications are screened by education professionals. Final selection is made by OSIA's National Education Committee. Grant recipients ONLY will be notified by April 15, 2004. Winners will be officially recognized at the National Education & Leadership Awards (NELA) Gala in Washington, D.C., on May 19, 2004. Monetary awards are presented directly to students' academic institutions in accordance with eligibility requirements above.

Pietro Secchia Scholarship (John Cabot University, Rome): Undergraduate students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college in fall 2004 are eligible for the Pietro Secchia Scholarship for study abroad in Rome, Italy. The Sons of Italy Foundation/George L. Graziadio Scholarship: Students at the George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University, Ca., are eligible for this scholarship. Requirements for General Scholarships

1. Official Application Form

Complete and submit the official application form, or a photocopy, including self-addressed, stamped postcard for receipt of application.

2. Official Transcripts

Submit one official transcript from each academic institution attended through December 2003 (see below). All transcripts must be stamped by the institution and included in a separate, sealed envelope. Transcripts may be sent separately but must be postmarked by Feb. 28, 2004.
  • High school students: transcript should include class rank and GPA.
  • Undergraduates: submit undergraduate and high school transcripts.
  • Graduates/Professional Students: submit graduate and undergraduate transcripts.
3. Test Scores

Submit copies of official results from all standardized tests (ACT, SAT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT) taken during the past five years. Scores reported on official transcripts will usually fulfill this requirement.

4. Activities List

Submit a current résumé or curriculum vitae outlining activities, work experience, volunteer service, and honors.

5. Letters of Recommendation

Submit two letters of recommendation from teachers, professors, or educational administrators.

6. Essay

Submit a typewritten essay of 500-750 words on the principal contributions of Italian Americans to U.S. culture and society.

7. Processing Fee*

A non-refundable $25 processing fee must accompany each application. Only money orders will be accepted; no checks under any circumstance. Make money orders payable to the Sons of Italy Foundation. Any application without the processing fee, or with the processing fee postmarked after the deadline will not be eligible.

*SIF Responsibilities: The Sons of Italy Foundation takes no responsibility for incomplete applications. Processing fees for incomplete applications will not be refunded.


Henry Salvatori Scholarship

The Sons of Italy Foundation also offers a special academic award, the Henry Salvatori Scholarship.

Established by the late renowned philanthropist for whom it is named, the Henry Salvatori Scholarship is a $5,000 grant awarded to a college-bound high school senior who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, distinguished scholarship, and a deep understanding and respect for the principles for which our nation was founded – liberty, freedom, and equality.

After earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in physics from Columbia University, Henry Salvatori founded the Western Geophysical Company, one of the world's largest oil-exploration firms.

Throughout his life, Henry Salvatori was active in encouraging vigorous scholarship and teaching on the history of America's founding and the philosophy that led to the establishment of the U.S. Constitution.

Requirements for Henry Salvatori Scholarship

Requirements+ and deadlines are the same as requirements and deadlines for the General Scholarships, with the following exceptions:

Substitute the following items for items #5 and #6 in the list of requirements for the General Scholarships Section:

Letters of Recommendation: Submit only two letters of recommendation from public figures whose careers have demonstrated a commitment to the principles the scholarship embodies.

Essay: Submit a typewritten essay of 750-1000 words on the following topic: The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are considered to be living documents by many historical and legal scholars. Discuss the relevance of these documents to the United States of America today and the meaning of these documents to the principles of liberty, freedom, and equality in the 21st century.

Complete the following item in addition to all the requirements for the General Scholarships:

Cover letter: Submit a typewritten cover letter of 150- 250 words outlining your academic and professional goals.

+Henry Salvatori Scholarship applicants are automatically eligible for one of the General Scholarships. Complete only the Henry Salvatori Scholarship requirements.
