Press Contact: Diane Crespy, 202-547-8115 dcrespy@osia.org

For Immediate Release:

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 3, 2002 – The Order Sons of Italy in America® (OSIA), the nation's oldest and largest national organization for people of Italian descent, has established a news service to inform the U.S. media about the issues, initiatives and current events affecting the nation's estimated 25 million Americans of Italian descent.

Located in OSIA's national headquarters in Washington, D.C., the Sons of Italy® News Bureau also will serve as a resource for journalists seeking Italian American demographics and statistics (including Italian language studies in the U.S.) and experts to interview on Italian American culture and history.

In addition, the Sons of Italy® News Bureau is a source on little-known facts about Italian American contributions to U.S. history and culture, authentic Italian American customs and traditions, and Italian American festivals (local and national). Journalists may contact the Sons of Italy® News Bureau online at www.osia.org/public/newsroom.htm.

The Order Sons of Italy in America® is the oldest and largest national organization for people of Italian heritage in the United States. It was established in 1905 and today has 575,000 members and supporters as well as 700 chapters coast to coast.

OSIA works at the community, national and international levels to promote the heritage and culture of Italian Americans, the nation's fifth largest ethnic group, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Visit OSIA at www.osia.org. E-mail: nationaloffice@osia.org.
