Sons of Italy® Names First Deputy Executive Director

WASHINGTON -- For the first time in its 97-year history, the Order Sons of Italy in America® (OSIA), the world's largest and longest established organization representing men and women of Italian heritage, has a deputy executive director of its national headquarters in Washington. The position went to Dona De Sanctis, former director of research and cultural affairs at the National Italian American Foundation in Washington. As deputy executive director, De Sanctis oversees OSIA's public relations and communications programs, including its national quarterly magazine Italian America® , and direct the public education and anti-stereotyping campaigns of the Commission for Social Justice®, OSIA's anti-defamation arm. Her appointment was effective Jan. 22. De Sanctis holds a doctorate in Italian and comparative literature from the City University of New York and a masters in Italian from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is bilingual in Italian and English, and studied at the University of Rome on a Fulbright grant. Born and raised in New York City, she lived in Italy for many years and moved to Washington in 1983. She has taught Italian at Brooklyn College, was a translator/news broadcaster for the Vatican Radio in Rome and worked as a reporter in Washington.
