5/15: Plans to Honor Sinatra at Gala Continue

Sons of Italy Foundation® Mourns the Loss of Frank Sinatra

Plans to Honor Sinatra at the 10th Anniversary National Education & Leadership Awards Gala Continue

Washington, D.C., May 15, 1998 - The Sons of Italy Foundation® mourns last night's passing of Frank Sinatra, a wonderful humanitarian and America's truly greatest all-around entertainer.

"His remarkable musical ability and talent has touched us all, and the rich memories he left us will remain timeless," said Philip R. Piccigallo, national executive director of the foundation.

The foundation will proceed with plans to honor Sinatra on May 21 by presenting its 1998 Humanitarian Award, posthumously, at the 10th Anniversary National Education & Leadership Awards Gala, at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

The foundation selected Sinatra for the award last year because of his extraordinary philanthropic generosity. The legendary entertainer raised more than $1 billion during his lifetime for numerous charities.

"While we are deeply saddened by his loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to his supportive wife, Barbara, and his entire family, we would like the NELA Gala to be a celebration of his life, his phenomenal achievements and talent, his singular zest and passion, and his inspiring philanthropy. We believe Mr. Sinatra would have preferred it this way," Piccigallo said.
