Who Are We? Italian America is the most widely read magazine in the U.S. for Italian Americans. It is a quarterly magazine, published by the Order Sons of Italy in America® (OSIA), the nation's largest and oldest organization for people of Italian heritage.
Most of the magazine is written in-house with the exception of two to four feature-length articles in each issue. We invite freelance writers to submit queries for these features.
What Do We Want? We look for stories about Italian Americans, their history, culture, contributions and issues that do not run in the mainstream magazines.
Tightly written stories with character, drama and impact. We look for accurate facts, dates and statistics where relevant.
Topics can include an important person of Italian heritage living or dead; little-known facts from Italian and Italian American history; a new Italian or Italian American product, discovery, cultural accomplishment or issue; cultural/scientific/medical news from Italy.
We do not publish travel stories, personal memoirs, or food/recipe articles unless there is an historical or important cultural point.
Features run from 750 to 1,000 words and must have 2-4 digitals, preferably in color in TIF or JPG format at 300 to 400 DPIs.
Send a query (300-word-max) to Editor Dona De Sanctis by email ddesanctis@osia.org or by mail at the address below. No telephone calls please.
If accepted, article must be emailed as a Word document and the digitals as .TIF or .JPG files.
We pay $100 to $250 dollars for the article and the digitals. Payment is made after author's final approval of the edited article.
We purchase non-exclusive worldwide periodical publication and syndication rights in all languages and mediums for the story and digitals. The magazine shares all syndication/reprint fees with the author, who retains full rights to the story.
